Types of Headaches

At Headache MD we want to help you solve your headache problems for good. A step in the right direction is to identify what type of headache you are suffering from. The information below describes some of the most common types of headaches. Though, this knowledge is extremely useful, we recommend that you do not self diagnose. Please schedule an appointment with our headache specialists at our clinic to determine what type of headache you have and what treatment is best for you.

Primary and Secondary Headaches

HeadacheMD specialists generally group headaches into two categories:

1. Primary Headaches are headaches that seem to happen without a cause or underlying condition. Though these headaches are painful, they are not usually dangerous, and can be treated easily with over the counter and prescribed medications.

Some of the commonly known primary headaches are tension headaches, migraine headaches, cluster headaches, exertion headaches and sex headaches.

2. Secondary Headaches are of more concern, as they may result from specific underlying, and, perhaps, dangerous conditions.

These headaches may be related to:

  • Allergies
  • Brain Aneurysm
  • Caffeine Withdrawal
  • Eyestrain
  • Fever
  • Hangover
  • Hormonal Headaches
  • Hunger
  • Hypertension
  • Post-Traumatic Stress
  • Sinus Trouble
  • TMJ
  • Tumors

Because of the sometimes dangerous nature of secondary class headaches, it is very important that you see a headache specialist to rule out any type of disease or hazardous, underlying condition.

Other Types of Headaches

Other types of headaches include: cranial neuralgias, central and primary facial pain and other types of neuralgias. Neuralgia means relating to the nerves. Headache MD doctors are qualified neuralgia specialists and trained to diagnose and treat these and all types of headaches.
